extra-large-gobi-desert-eye-agate
Gobi Desert Agate Large | Desert Eyes

Gobi Desert Eye Agate is particularly sought after for naturally occurring concentric and orbicular formations that create distinctive eye-like patterns across the stone. These features develop through successive layers of silica-rich material forming around individual growth centres within the Agate, producing circular structures that can vary considerably in size, colour and definition.

This extra-large Gobi Agate specimen displays an unusually prominent central eye accompanied by multiple smaller eye formations across its naturally weathered exterior. Gobi Agates are associated with the desert regions of northern China and Mongolia, where prolonged exposure to desert conditions contributes to their characteristic surfaces and sculptural forms. Its substantial size, multiple natural eyes and unpolished desert character make this an especially interesting specimen for collectors of Gobi Agate, Eye Agate and unusual Chinese Agate material. 🤎✨

⚖️ Weight: 107gms

📏 Size: H 5.5cm x L 4.1cm x W 4.2cm

🌎 Source: Gobi Desert, Inner Mongolia

🔮 Gobi Desert Agate: The Stone Of Grounding and Protection

❤️💛💚 Root Chakra, Solar Plexus Chakra, Heart Chakra

This unusual extra-large Gobi Desert Agate immediately caught our attention for the prominent natural “eye” formation sitting at the top of the specimen, surrounded by a number of smaller eye-like formations appearing across its surface.

The largest eye rises almost like a rounded cap, displaying distinct concentric layers of warm ochre, cream, grey and earthy brown. Around the body, smaller rounded and oval formations emerge from the surface, each with its own subtle banding and shape. Once you spot the first few, you inevitably start turning the piece around looking for the next one.

These eye-like patterns are a natural result of the Agate's layered growth. Agate is a microcrystalline form of Quartz, predominantly composed of chalcedony, and develops as silica-rich material is deposited in successive layers. In some specimens, those layers form around particular growth centres, producing the concentric circular and orbicular markings collectors often refer to as “eyes”.

Gobi Agates are associated with the vast Gobi Desert region of northern China and Mongolia, where prolonged exposure to harsh desert conditions can naturally weather and polish their surfaces. Unlike conventionally polished Agate, much of their appeal lies in the natural exterior, unusual shapes and patterns created during formation and subsequently revealed through weathering.

We selected this piece in China from a vendor specialising predominantly in Gobi Agate and Hubei Agate, and it was the combination of its substantial size and multiple eye formations that made this one particularly hard to leave behind.

Metaphysically, Agate is traditionally associated with grounding, stability and balance. Eye Agates have also long been connected symbolically with protection and watchfulness, making those naturally occurring circular formations particularly appealing beyond their geological interest.

But for us, the fascination is really in the stone itself. One large eye immediately draws you in, then all those smaller eyes slowly begin revealing themselves around the specimen. It is exactly the kind of Gobi Agate that becomes more interesting the longer you look at it. 🤎
