Across the specimen are clusters of sharply defined crystals ranging from bright olive green through to much deeper green, with some showing remarkable translucency and an almost glassy, gem-like quality when illuminated. Their strong lustre catches the light beautifully, revealing variations in colour that can look considerably darker until light passes through the crystals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEpidote is a calcium aluminium iron sorosilicate mineral, most commonly represented by the formula Ca₂(Al,Fe)₃(SiO₄)(Si₂O₇)O(OH). Its green colour is strongly influenced by iron within its crystal structure, with variations in iron content contributing to the considerable range of greens Epidote can display.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I particularly love about this specimen is the crystal habit. The Epidote has formed as distinct elongated and bladed crystals, with visible striations running along many of their faces. Rather than appearing as a simple mineral coating, there are substantial individual crystals overlapping and growing amongst one another, including some beautifully gemmy formations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRising amongst the Epidote are clear to slightly included Quartz points, providing a striking contrast against the rich green crystals. The largest Quartz point creates wonderful height, while smaller Quartz crystals emerge throughout the matrix, making the specimen interesting from almost every angle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJinkouhe, in Sichuan Province, is known amongst mineral collectors for producing attractive Alpine-type mineral assemblages, including combinations of Epidote and Quartz.
