Belonging to the zeolite mineral group, the Mesolite forms delicate spherical and hemispherical radiating clusters that sparkle brilliantly under direct light. Small crystalline pockets, drusy areas and contrasting mineralisation add further interest throughout the specimen. Wagholi Quarry is internationally recognised amongst collectors for the remarkable zeolites produced from cavities within the ancient basalt flows of the Deccan Traps, making this an impressive locality specimen with both exceptional visual character and fascinating geology.

⚖️ Weight: 615gms

📏 Size: 7.5cm H x 11.5cm L x 9.1cm W

🌎 Source: Wagholi Quarry in Pune, Maharashtra, India

🔮 Mesolite: Expansion Of Awareness

🤍 All Chakras

There is something rather extraordinary about a mineral that can look this delicate and still have such an impressive geological story behind it.

This beautiful Mesolite specimen comes from the Wagholi Quarry in Pune, Maharashtra, India, an area internationally known amongst mineral collectors for its exceptional zeolite specimens associated with the Deccan Traps.

Across the matrix are numerous spherical and hemispherical sprays of exceptionally fine, needle-like Mesolite crystals. Some form wonderfully fluffy-looking cream and white formations, while others radiate outwards in almost perfect little bursts. Under direct light, those tiny crystal needles catch individually, giving the entire specimen an incredible sparkle that photographs simply struggle to behave themselves around.

Mesolite is a hydrated sodium-calcium aluminosilicate belonging to the zeolite group, with the formula Na₂Ca₂Al₆Si₉O₃₀·8H₂O. Its characteristic acicular, or needle-like, crystal habit is particularly beautiful when thousands of extremely fine crystals grow together as radiating sprays such as those seen here.

The geology behind these Indian zeolites is equally fascinating. The immense basaltic lava flows of the Deccan Traps contain cavities left by gases within ancient lava. Over geological time, mineral-rich fluids circulated through these spaces, allowing zeolites and associated minerals to crystallise within them. What began as bubbles in volcanic rock millions of years ago ultimately became miniature mineral chambers.

This particular specimen has plenty happening beyond the Mesolite. Small sparkling crystalline pockets occur throughout the matrix, while sections of the surface appear to carry a fine drusy coating of tiny transparent to smoky crystals. There are also contrasting dark green to grey-green mineralised areas around the edges and matrix. Without further testing I wouldn't assign a definite mineral identification to these associated minerals, but visually they provide a wonderful earthy contrast against the almost impossibly delicate Mesolite.

And delicate really is the operative word here. Those fine Mesolite needles are fragile and should be handled as little as possible. This is very much a specimen to admire rather than continually pick up for a chat. 😂

Traditional Crystal Symbolism

Mesolite is traditionally associated with higher awareness, clarity, intuition and quietening mental clutter. Its radiating formations have also led to associations with expansion, connection and allowing ideas or insight to move beyond our usual boundaries.

There is something rather fitting about that symbolism when you consider how Mesolite actually grows. Thousands of individual crystals radiating from common centres, each incredibly fine, yet together creating these spectacular formations.

Scientifically fascinating, visually ridiculous in the best possible way, and an absolutely beautiful example of why the zeolites of Maharashtra have such a strong following amongst mineral collectors. 🤍✨
