Small golden-yellow Calcite crystals are visible through the clear Selenite window, appearing almost suspended within the specimen when viewed from the front. Their warm colour is subtle, but against the colourless transparency of the Selenite they become a wonderful mineralogical detail to discover.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSelenite is the transparent crystalline variety of Gypsum, a hydrated calcium sulphate mineral. Its softness and perfect cleavage make large, well-preserved specimens particularly delicate, while its ability to form exceptionally transparent crystals is responsible for the glass-like appearance seen through this piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCalcite is calcium carbonate and occurs in an enormous range of crystal habits and colours. Here, the small yellow Calcite adds both another mineral species and a beautiful point of contrast within the otherwise clear and white specimen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnder ultraviolet light, the specimen reveals another dimension, with areas responding differently beneath the UV. But unlike some of our other Qinglong pieces, I think the real story of this specimen is what can already be seen in ordinary light.
