This Madagascan fossil cluster combines three distinct cephalopod lineages Cleoniceras, Ammonite, and Nautilus with the added bonus of some clams representing over one hundred million years of marine evolution. Each specimen was individually selected for preservation quality, definition of sutures, and chamber integrity before being mounted together to form a unified sculptural display.

The fossils originate from the Cretaceous seabeds of Madagascar’s Mahajanga region, a site globally recognised for its exceptional fossilisation conditions. During burial, calcium-rich seawater percolated through the sediment, replacing the original aragonite shell with minerals such as calcite and sometimes silica. This process, known as permineralisation, produced the distinctive crystalline inclusions now visible within the chamber structures.

Polishing reveals internal septa and suture lines that illustrate the evolutionary refinement of cephalopod morphology. The Cleoniceras displays complex, frilled sutures typical of ammonites; the Nautilus retains its smooth, simple whorls, showing the divergent paths of these related groups.

This assembled piece highlights both geological and biological continuity with three species separated by vast epochs, yet united through the same logarithmic spiral geometry that defines many natural forms. The result is a scientifically significant and visually striking collector specimen that bridges palaeontology, natural geometry, and fine craftsmanship.

🌀 Fossils

Fossils are life forms of either plants or animals that have been captured within an impression and preserved usually within the sedimentary rocks. Another type of fossil is resin fossilization where insects and plants are embedded within amber.

Most fossils are just casings or cavities of what was, and the soft parts of the animals and plants are rarely preserved due to certain salts and minerals breaking down the organic matter within.

Now another type of fossil can be completely replaced by an imprint or impression of the original shell, animal or plant within sedimentary rock or hard rock such as petrified wood.

Lastly a process called mineralization, is where an entire cavity can be completely replaced meaning if it was a shell, it would have completely dissolved. Through this process certain acids and solutions penetrate the cavity and form a new matrix within the cavity creating a 3D version of the shell itself.
