This skull is carved from Money Agate sourced from China, a quartz based material known for its dramatic colour movement and layered internal structure. Geologically, it sits within the chalcedony and jasper family, composed of microcrystalline silicon dioxide formed through silica rich fluids filling cavities and fractures over time.

The surface reveals flowing combinations of deep olive green, earthy red, burnt orange, cream and charcoal. These colours are the result of iron oxides and other trace minerals introduced during formation. The swirling, fractured appearance comes from natural brecciation, where sections of material were broken, compressed and later re cemented by silica, creating the patchwork movement visible throughout the piece.

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5 to 7, Money Agate is durable and well suited to detailed carving. The polish enhances contrast between mineral zones while preserving the natural variation that gives the stone its character.

Unlike traditional heliotrope bloodstone, which shows distinct red spotting on a dark green base, this Chinese Money Agate presents broader colour fields and blended transitions. The effect is bold but organic, with no two areas repeating.

The skull form works particularly well with this material. The curves of the crown, jaw and cheek lines allow the natural banding and mineral flow to wrap around the sculpture, revealing new detail from every angle.
