Carved from beautifully banded Sardonyx, this alien skull highlights the natural strength and patterning of the stone itself.

The name Sardonyx comes from its composition. It is formed from layers of sard and onyx.
Sard refers to the warmer reddish brown tones created by iron within the chalcedony.
Onyx refers to the white, darker brown to black banded layers.

These alternating deposits developed gradually as silica rich solutions settled in rhythmic sequences over time. The result is the clean, defined banding that makes Sardonyx so recognisable.

In this carving, those natural layers move across the crown and facial contours, enhancing the form rather than distracting from it. The pattern is completely natural, embedded within the stone rather than added to it. 

With a Mohs hardness of around 6.5 to 7, Sardonyx takes a high polish while remaining durable enough for detailed carvings. The polished surface brings forward the contrast between sard and onyx layers, giving depth and clarity under light.

The name Galactic Guardian suits its steady, observant presence.
