These beautifully polished whole black ammonites are natural fossil specimens, preserved in their original spiral form and carefully polished to enhance their surface. Ammonites are extinct marine molluscs that lived millions of years ago, and over time their shells were gradually replaced by minerals, allowing their structure to be preserved in stone.

Unlike sliced ammonites, these pieces remain whole, with the outer shell intact. This gives them a smooth, continuous spiral form without visible internal chambers, creating a more sculptural and refined appearance while still retaining their natural fossil structure.

The deep black colouring is less common than the usual brown ammonites and is caused by mineral replacement during fossilisation. In many cases, darker tones develop due to the presence of carbon rich material or iron minerals within the fossil, which create the rich black finish seen in these pieces.

The polished surface enhances the natural contours of the spiral, allowing the shape of the fossil to stand out clearly while maintaining its original form.

šŸŒ€Ā Fossils

Fossils are life forms of either plants or animals that have been captured within an impression and preserved usually within the sedimentary rocks. Another type of fossil is resin fossilization where insects and plants are embedded within amber.

Most fossils are just casings or cavities of what was, and the soft parts of the animals and plants are rarely preserved due to certain salts and minerals breaking down the organic matter within.

Now another type of fossil can be completely replaced by an imprint or impression of the original shell, animal or plant within sedimentary rock or hard rock such as petrified wood.

Lastly a process called mineralization, is where an entire cavity can be completely replaced meaning if it was a shell, it would have completely dissolved. Through this process certain acids and solutions penetrate the cavity and form a new matrix within the cavity creating a 3D version of the shell itself.
