These Gold Sheen Obsidian skulls have a wonderful little secret. At first glance they appear almost entirely black, but turn them through the light and that characteristic golden sheen begins to sweep across the surface, revealing layers of bronze, gold and smoky metallic reflection.

Gold Sheen Obsidian is a naturally occurring variety of volcanic glass. Unlike crystalline minerals, Obsidian forms when silica-rich volcanic lava cools so rapidly that there isn't sufficient time for an ordered crystal structure to develop.

The golden optical effect is created by extremely fine gas bubbles and microscopic structures trapped within the volcanic glass as it forms. When light interacts with these internal layers at particular angles, the distinctive gold sheen becomes visible. This is why the appearance can change so dramatically as each skull is moved.
