These striking obelisks from South Africa bring together purple Stichtite and contrasting green Serpentine, creating naturally patterned pieces where no two will ever look quite the same.

Throughout each obelisk, lilac, mauve and deeper purple Stichtite moves through shades of green Serpentine in irregular patches, veins and natural formations. Some pieces may have strong concentrations of purple, while others feature predominantly green Serpentine with smaller areas of Stichtite appearing throughout.

Stichtite is a magnesium chromium carbonate hydroxide mineral, with chromium responsible for its characteristic pinkish-purple to violet colouring. It can occur alongside Serpentine within chromium-rich, altered ultramafic rocks, producing the distinctive purple and green combination seen in this South African material.

Serpentine is the name given to a group of magnesium-rich minerals rather than one individual mineral species. Its colouring can range from soft yellow-green and olive through to deeper greens, creating a wonderful natural contrast against the purple Stichtite.

The obelisk shape works particularly well with this material. Its long polished faces allow the natural patterning to travel vertically through the piece, while the tapered point draws attention to different bands, patches and transitions between the two minerals.

The obelisk itself is an ancient architectural form, most strongly associated with ancient Egypt, where monumental stone obelisks were connected with the sun and were erected at temples. In modern crystal symbolism, the shape has also become associated with focus, direction and the concentration of energy toward its point.

Metaphysically, Stichtite is associated with compassion, emotional awareness and gentle healing, while Serpentine is traditionally connected with grounding, renewal and personal growth.

The obelisk is an ancient architectural form most famously associated with ancient Egypt, where monumental stone obelisks were created as tall, four-sided pillars tapering towards a pyramid-shaped point. Historically, they were associated with the sun and were often erected in pairs at the entrances to temples.

Today, the obelisk form has become a popular way of shaping and displaying crystals and natural stone. Its long, clean lines provide a wonderful surface for showcasing natural banding, patterns, inclusions and changes in colour, while the tapered point draws the eye upwards.

Symbolically, the obelisk is often associated with strength, stability, connection and the meeting of earth and sky. Its solid base and upward-reaching form give it a strong presence, whether displayed individually or amongst a larger crystal collection.

Within modern crystal practices, obelisks are believed to help focus and direct the properties associated with the crystal from which they are carved. The pointed apex is traditionally viewed as a way of directing energy, while the four-sided base represents grounding and stability.
