These beautiful spheres from South Africa bring together purple Stichtite and contrasting green Serpentine, creating a distinctive combination of colour and natural patterning that varies wonderfully from piece to piece.

Stichtite appears throughout the Serpentine in lilac, mauve and deeper purple areas, forming irregular patches, veins and markings against shades of green. Some spheres may display larger concentrations of purple, while others allow the Serpentine to dominate, making every sphere completely individual.

Stichtite is a magnesium chromium carbonate hydroxide mineral, with chromium responsible for its characteristic pinkish-purple to violet colouring. It can form in association with Serpentine within chromium-rich, altered ultramafic rocks, creating the beautiful purple and green combination seen in these South African pieces.

Serpentine is actually the name given to a group of magnesium-rich minerals rather than a single mineral species. Its colouring commonly ranges through yellow-green, olive and deeper greens, providing a wonderful natural contrast against the purple Stichtite.

Polishing this material into a sphere is particularly effective, as there is no single viewing side. The relationship between the two minerals can be followed around the entire surface, revealing new areas of colour, pattern and mineral formation as the sphere is turned.

Metaphysically, Stichtite is associated with compassion, emotional awareness and gentle healing, while Serpentine is traditionally connected with grounding, renewal and personal growth. Together they are often chosen for their calming and balancing symbolism.

With their unusual combination of purple and green and the natural variation between every piece, these South African Stichtite and Serpentine spheres are certainly not short on personality. 💜💚

There is something about a beautifully polished sphere that allows you to appreciate a crystal from every angle.

Unlike a point or freeform, a sphere has no obvious front or back. Its rounded form allows the natural patterns, banding, inclusions, colour changes and internal features of the stone to continue around the entire piece, often revealing something completely different each time it is turned.

I lost my dad two years ago and have been struggling with his loss and my grief.
