This exceptional specimen from Jiangxi Province, China brings together Golden Barite and Green Fluorite in a combination that is visually spectacular from almost every angle.

The front of the specimen is richly covered in warm golden Barite, with larger well-defined crystals surrounded by an extraordinary scattering of much smaller Barite crystals. These tiny facets are one of the details that make this piece so impressive. Under direct light they catch individually, creating a fine golden sparkle across the surface rather than relying solely upon the larger crystals for impact.

Barite, or barium sulphate (BaSO₄), is known for its relatively high specific gravity, meaning it feels unusually heavy for a non-metallic mineral. It crystallises in the orthorhombic system and can develop tabular, bladed and blocky crystal forms. Here, the combination of larger golden crystals and extensive finer crystallisation gives the specimen wonderful texture and depth.

Beneath all that gold sits beautiful Green Fluorite. In ordinary light its softer green colouring provides a superb contrast against the Barite, but illumination from behind reveals just how translucent portions of the Fluorite really are. The crystal body suddenly glows with saturated green, while areas of purple colour zoning can also be seen within the Fluorite.

That zoning is particularly interesting from a mineralogical perspective. Fluorite, CaF₂, is famous for its remarkable range of colours, which can be influenced by trace impurities, structural defects and exposure to natural radiation during formation. Different stages of crystal growth can preserve different colours within the same crystal, producing the internal zoning visible here.

Small areas of Quartz add another layer to the specimen, contributing clear, sparkling points amongst the Barite and Fluorite. There is quite a lot happening geologically here, yet none of the minerals compete. Somehow they have all agreed to dress for the same occasion. 😂

What really sets this specimen apart, however, is the sheer coverage across its display face. The Barite isn't confined to one isolated pocket. Golden crystallisation travels extensively across the Fluorite, creating an almost continuous mineral landscape of larger crystals, tiny sparkling facets and drusy areas.

The specimen has also been paired with a custom-made display stand, designed specifically to support its natural shape and present the mineralisation vertically. This allows the full Barite-covered face to be appreciated while also making it very easy to introduce light behind the Fluorite and reveal its translucency and internal colour zoning.

✨ larger pieces have been around for a lot longer so to find a larger piece in a specific crystal can be an amazing investment. While smaller crystals depending on the stone itself might be of the rarer variety or the quality is outstanding, therefore it’s amazing it was even found.

✨ If it is a fragile and delicate crystal and has not sustained any damage or minor damage.

✨ Quality of course comes into it as you can have some amazing fluorite and then you have some beautiful gem like Fluorite which is quite rare, especially Blue Fluorite
