Some of the smallest stalls can hold the biggest surprises.

We discovered this extraordinary little Dragon Turtle during our buying trip in China, tucked amongst a very small collection belonging to one specialist vendor. There wasn’t an enormous amount on the table, but what was there stopped us in our tracks. This was also where we found our Blue Moonstone Dragon Turtle and Auralite 23 Pixiu, three completely different pieces united by one thing: exceptional and unusual material.

Carved from Tanzanian Rainbow Sunstone and Black Moonstone, this Dragon Turtle is one of those pieces that really needs to be moved beneath the light to understand what makes it special.

Across the dark charcoal to black body of the carving runs an incredibly fine natural sheen. As the angle changes, flashes of bronze, gold, silvery blue and subtle rainbow colour appear across the surface, creating an almost lattice-like optical effect through sections of the stone. In some areas the flash is strong and concentrated, while in others it appears as incredibly fine shimmering lines running through the material.

The polish has been particularly well done, allowing these optical effects to remain the focus while still preserving the detail of the carving. From the textured shell and small feet beneath to the expressive dragon head, scales and curled tail, there is a surprising amount of detail packed into such a compact piece.

The combination of Sunstone and Moonstone material is particularly fascinating because both belong to the feldspar mineral family. Feldspars are well known for producing beautiful optical phenomena as light interacts with microscopic structures and inclusions within the stone. Here, those effects appear against a much darker body colour than we normally associate with Sunstone, giving the carving its unusual metallic and rainbow appearance.

Then there is the Dragon Turtle itself.

Known as Longgui (龙龟) in Chinese tradition, the Dragon Turtle combines two highly symbolic creatures. The Dragon is associated with strength, success, authority and good fortune, while the Turtle represents longevity, stability and endurance. Together, the Dragon Turtle has become a traditional Feng Shui symbol associated with prosperity, protection, career advancement and long-term success.

That symbolism feels particularly fitting for this material. Metaphysically, Sunstone is traditionally associated with confidence, vitality, optimism and personal power, while Black Moonstone is linked with intuition, emotional awareness, new beginnings and navigating periods of change. Together they create an interesting balance between moving forward confidently and trusting the quieter instincts guiding you.

But for us, this piece will always be connected to that little stall in China.

It was proof once again that a vendor does not need hundreds of pieces to make an impression. Sometimes ten extraordinary things on a table are far more exciting than a thousand ordinary ones.

And this little Dragon Turtle was definitely one of the extraordinary ones. 🐉🐢✨
