Full of movement and personality, this Agate and Quartz carving captures a playful group of dolphins swimming together amongst rolling waves, with the variation within the stone used beautifully throughout the scene.

Three dolphins sweep around the carving in different directions, creating a wonderful sense of movement, while the carved waves and flowing base complete the ocean setting.

The rich reddish-brown areas contrast dramatically against the deep charcoal tones and milky Quartz sections, allowing the dolphins themselves to really stand out.

We were advised that the colouring of this piece is natural. Madagascar produces some beautifully dramatic Agate with naturally occurring reds, browns and darker areas, and we have seen other Madagascan pieces with very similar colouring represented as completely natural.

However, Madagascar is also well known for colour-enhanced Agate, and without laboratory testing we cannot independently confirm whether this particular piece has received any colour treatment. In the interests of transparency, we would rather tell you exactly what we know than make a claim we cannot verify.

Agate is a variety of Chalcedony within the Quartz family, composed of microscopic Quartz crystals and often forming with bands, patches and striking variations in colour.

This piece also appears to contain areas of crystalline or milky Quartz, particularly visible across the reverse, giving a fascinating glimpse into the material beneath the carving.

Dolphins have long been associated with joy, intelligence, friendship, communication and freedom. Highly social animals with remarkably complex behaviours, they also make beautiful symbols of cooperation, connection and navigating life’s changing currents.

Metaphysically, Agate is associated with grounding, balance and stability, while Quartz is traditionally connected with clarity and amplification. Combined with the dolphin symbolism, this piece carries a lovely message of staying connected, moving with change and remembering that life should contain a little play along the way.

Whatever the story behind its dramatic colouring, this is one of those carvings we chose because the finished piece simply made us smile. 🐬🌊✨
