Another of our first-pick shark carvings from China, and this Ocean Jasper beauty could hardly look more different from the last.

Niome and I had the opportunity to choose from the collection before anyone else, so we took our time selecting the sharks where the natural stone worked particularly well with the carving. This one was an easy choice.

Across the body are incredible sweeping bands of burgundy, earthy red, cream, golden mustard and deep green. Rather than sitting randomly within the carving, the bands curve around the shark from nose to tail, creating a natural sense of movement that almost looks as though water is flowing across its body.

The carving itself has a strong, streamlined profile with a prominent dorsal fin, sculpted side fins and a beautifully defined tail. The high polish brings out the depth of the colours and makes the intricate banding particularly noticeable as the piece is viewed from different angles.

Ocean Jasper is a patterned variety of Chalcedony from Madagascar and can vary enormously in appearance. Although it is well known for its orbicular formations, some pieces display beautiful banding, layered colour and other natural patterns, making each carving completely individual.

For us, this is exactly why choosing these sharks in person was so worthwhile. We weren't simply looking for a great shark carving, we wanted the stone itself to add something to the finished piece. With its extraordinary natural banding flowing through almost the entire body, this one certainly does.

Spiritually, the shark symbolises instinct, resilience, confidence and forward momentum. 🦈

As a creature constantly attuned to its surroundings, the shark represents trusting your intuition, recognising opportunities and moving through life with purpose rather than hesitation. Its ancient survival also makes it a powerful symbol of adaptability, endurance and having the courage to navigate changing waters.
