This striking mineral specimen brings together intensely coloured Cobaltoan Calcite and contrasting green Malachite, creating a beautiful combination of colour, texture and natural mineral growth.

The Cobaltoan Calcite covers a substantial area of the specimen in rich raspberry and magenta pink, with countless small crystalline surfaces catching the light and creating a wonderful natural sparkle. The depth of colour is particularly impressive, ranging from deeper saturated areas through to softer pink where the underlying matrix becomes visible.

Growing across and amongst the Cobaltoan Calcite are contrasting formations of green Malachite. These occur as small clusters and irregular patches across the surface, breaking through the pink with earthy green and adding another layer of texture and mineral interest to the specimen.

Cobaltoan Calcite is a cobalt-bearing variety of Calcite, with its distinctive pink colour created when cobalt substitutes for some of the calcium within the crystal structure. Depending on the amount of cobalt present and the conditions under which the mineral formed, its colour can range from soft pink through to intense raspberry, magenta and reddish pink.

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, instantly recognisable for its characteristic green colour. It forms in the oxidised zones of copper deposits and can occur alongside cobalt-bearing minerals, producing combinations such as the vivid pink and green seen across this specimen.

What makes this piece particularly appealing is how extensively the Cobaltoan Calcite covers the matrix. Rather than isolated areas of pink, the specimen presents as a predominantly rich raspberry surface, interrupted by pockets of green Malachite and areas of exposed matrix.

We had the specimen mounted vertically onto a custom clear acrylic stand, allowing the full face of the mineralisation to be displayed while keeping the stand visually unobtrusive. It gives the piece height and presence without competing with that incredible natural colour.

Metaphysically, Cobaltoan Calcite is traditionally associated with compassion, emotional healing and the Heart Chakra, while Malachite is associated with transformation, protection and personal growth.

For a mineral specimen that essentially decided raspberry pink and green should absolutely go together, it makes a fairly convincing argument. 💗💚

Then there are crystals that have a delicate structure like Scolecite with their acicular fine needles shooting out from their matrix. Such delicate specimens and when you think about first the care within the handling that’s gone into first mining them, to then shipping them all around the world, my hat goes off to them.

Here are a few things to consider and even research when looking at collectible crystals for yourself -

The size of a certain crystal can be a factor as to whether it’s considered a collectible piece and can vary depending on the crystal type.

larger pieces have been around for a lot longer so to find a larger piece in a specific crystal can be an amazing investment. While smaller crystals depending on the stone itself might be of the rarer variety or the quality is outstanding, therefore it’s amazing it was even found.

If it is a fragile and delicate crystal and has not sustained any damage or minor damage. 

Quality of course comes into it as you can have some amazing fluorite and then you have some beautiful gem like Fluorite which is quite rare, especially Blue Fluorite

Specific crystals formed and still on their matrix opposed to polished and carved pieces etc of the same crystal. This can be the game changer between an incredible piece and a collectible piece.

In the end it comes down to what you are drawn too and what is drawn to you. The bonus is when you buy a collectible crystal it becomes a physical investment and will only grow in value in the years to come.
