Another of our extraordinary double teapots from the same Hubei Agate vendor, and this one shows just how completely different two carvings from the same style can be.

Hand carved from Hubei Agate, this piece is made up of two individual teapots stacked together, with the smaller upper teapot sitting neatly within the opening of the larger one below. Lift the upper teapot away and the opening of the lower teapot is revealed. The smaller teapot then has its own removable lid, finished with a beautifully carved little bird perched on top. 🐦

The amount of work in these still amazes us.

This particular piece has a beautiful combination of warm reddish brown, burnt orange, smoky grey and softer cream tones. The upper teapot is predominantly a rich warm red, with flowers carved around its body and natural variations moving through the stone. Even the little bird on top has been positioned within a contrasting section of the Agate.

The lower teapot is where the material becomes especially interesting. Deep reddish and smoky translucent Agate flows across the upper areas, while a large pale section runs around the base. Within this lighter area are beautiful feathery, almost crystalline-looking formations that create an incredible contrast against the polished darker Agate surrounding them.

Flowers, leaves and branches have been carved across the body, while the curved handle and spout have been incorporated into the natural colour changes of the stone. There is so much depth when the light hits it, particularly through the red-orange translucent areas.

Hubei Agate is known for its wonderful natural variation, and carvings like this show exactly why we were so fascinated by this vendor's work. Rather than selecting completely uniform material, the carver has allowed the different colours, patterns and formations within the stone to become part of the finished design.

Teapots have a long cultural connection with hospitality, gathering and sharing time together in China. Here, that symbolism feels particularly fitting. Two teapots have literally been brought together as one piece, topped by a tiny bird and surrounded by flowers.

And after spending hours at this vendor's very small table, apparently Niome and I didn't simply become crystal teapot people.

We became double crystal teapot people. 🤣🫖🫖🐦

Then there are crystals that have a delicate structure like Scolecite with their acicular fine needles shooting out from their matrix. Such delicate specimens and when you think about first the care within the handling that’s gone into first mining them, to then shipping them all around the world, my hat goes off to them.

The pieces we have in stock are pieces that truly have been cared for through all the processes it took for them to reach us.

Here are a few things to consider and even research when looking at collectible crystals for yourself -

The size of a certain crystal can be a factor as to whether it’s considered a collectible piece and can vary depending on the crystal type.

larger pieces have been around for a lot longer so to find a larger piece in a specific crystal can be an amazing investment. While smaller crystals depending on the stone itself might be of the rarer variety or the quality is outstanding, therefore it’s amazing it was even found.

If it is a fragile and delicate crystal and has not sustained any damage or minor damage. 

Quality of course comes into it as you can have some amazing fluorite and then you have some beautiful gem like Fluorite which is quite rare, especially Blue Fluorite

Specific crystals formed and still on their matrix opposed to polished and carved pieces etc of the same crystal. This can be the game changer between an incredible piece and a collectible piece.

In the end it comes down to what you are drawn too and what is drawn to you. The bonus is when you buy a collectible crystal it becomes a physical investment and will only grow in value in the years to come.
