🔮 Opal: Earth's Rainbow Light
❤️💛 Root & Solar Plexus Chakras
Australian Boulder Opal has a character completely its own, and this natural pendant from Koroit, Queensland is a beautiful example of how much of that character can come from the relationship between Opal and its ironstone host rock.
Polished into an organic freeform shape, this piece is dominated by rich earthy ironstone in deep brown, charcoal and warm golden tones. Running through the surface are fine natural seams of Opal, including a small flash of purple and a delicate thin seam of green that becomes visible as the piece moves through the light.
Rather than being heavily worked into a traditional jewellery setting, the stone has been simply drilled and finished on a black cord, allowing the natural patterning of the Koroit material to remain the focus.
Koroit, in western Queensland, is one of Australia’s recognised Boulder Opal producing areas and is particularly known for highly individual material where Opal develops through cracks, seams and cavities within ironstone. In Boulder Opal, the host rock is intentionally retained rather than removed, becoming part of the finished piece and preserving the geological relationship between the Opal and the rock in which it formed.
This particular pendant is a wonderful example of the more pattern-focused side of Koroit Boulder Opal. The contrast between its golden ironstone formations, darker matrix and those fine touches of purple and green Opal gives it an almost abstract landscape appearance, with something different revealing itself from each side.
Opal is a hydrated form of silica, while the surrounding ironstone provides the earthy structure and distinctive character associated with Australian Boulder Opal. Every piece develops differently, making natural Koroit material particularly interesting for collectors who appreciate individuality over perfect uniformity.
Metaphysically, Opal is traditionally associated with creativity, inspiration, emotional expression and individuality, while Boulder Opal is also often connected with grounding through its natural ironstone matrix.
A completely individual piece of Queensland geology, with the ironstone telling just as much of the story as those little flashes of Opal running through it. 🇦🇺✨
