This fascinating large Gobi Desert Agate is absolutely covered in natural eye formations, with concentric circles appearing across almost every part of its surface.

Unlike our first specimen, which has one dominant eye formation, this piece is all about abundance. Large and small eyes sit alongside one another, some perfectly rounded and others irregular, with rings of ochre, caramel, cream, brown and almost black creating remarkable natural patterns.

Several of the formations occur in pairs, giving parts of the specimen an almost face-like appearance. Depending on which way you turn it, another little “face” seems to appear, making this a particularly fun piece to explore. Once you start seeing them, you really can't unsee them. 😂

There are also unexpected touches of green running through areas of the specimen, contrasting beautifully against the warmer desert tones. I would leave the exact identity of the green material unspecified without mineral testing, but visually it adds another layer of interest to an already incredibly detailed piece.

The circular patterns are created through successive layers of silica-rich material developing around individual growth centres. Over time, these produce the concentric and orbicular formations collectors commonly describe as “eyes”. On this specimen, multiple generations and sizes of these formations have created an especially complex surface.

Gobi Desert Agates are associated with the desert regions of northern China and Mongolia, where prolonged exposure to wind, sand and extreme environmental conditions naturally weathers their surfaces. This is part of what makes them so interesting to collect. Their exterior hasn't been polished to manufacture the patterns you see. Much of their character comes from natural formation followed by long-term desert weathering.

We selected this piece in China from a vendor specialising predominantly in Gobi and Hubei Agates, and with this many natural eyes across one specimen, there was really no leaving it behind.

Metaphysically, Agate is traditionally associated with grounding, stability and balance, while naturally occurring eye formations have long carried symbolism of protection, awareness and watchfulness.

But I think this one's personality is what will win people over. Eyes, circles, little faces, green areas and patterns everywhere you look. Turn it around and chances are something else will be staring back at you. 🤎👀

Then there are crystals that have a delicate structure like Scolecite with their acicular fine needles shooting out from their matrix. Such delicate specimens and when you think about first the care within the handling that’s gone into first mining them, to then shipping them all around the world, my hat goes off to them.

Here are a few things to consider and even research when looking at collectible crystals for yourself -

✨ The size of a certain crystal can be a factor as to whether it’s considered a collectible piece and can vary depending on the crystal type.

✨ larger pieces have been around for a lot longer so to find a larger piece in a specific crystal can be an amazing investment. While smaller crystals depending on the stone itself might be of the rarer variety or the quality is outstanding, therefore it’s amazing it was even found.

✨ If it is a fragile and delicate crystal and has not sustained any damage or minor damage.

✨ Quality of course comes into it as you can have some amazing fluorite and then you have some beautiful gem like Fluorite which is quite rare, especially Blue Fluorite

✨ Specific crystals formed and still on their matrix opposed to polished and carved pieces etc of the same crystal. This can be the game changer between an incredible piece and a collectible piece.

In the end it comes down to what you are drawn too and what is drawn to you. The bonus is when you buy a collectible crystal it becomes a physical investment and will only grow in value in the years to come.
