🔮 Carnelian: The Passionate Powerhouse

🧡 Sacral Chakra

This is the first release from a remarkable Chinese carver we discovered during our travels, and these pieces are unlike the Carnelian carvings we would normally come across.

Hidden away in a local location well outside the usual crystal shopping areas, we found a carver who has spent decades specialising in one material: Carnelian. He works entirely by hand and produces only a very small number of carvings at any one time, generally around 10 to 15 pieces. Each can take days to complete, with his more intricate carvings requiring up to a week of painstaking work.

What makes these even more interesting is his approach to the stone. The Carnelian remains natural and unpolished, retaining its original surface texture, translucency and variations in colour. Rather than polishing the material into a uniform finish, he works with the individual piece, carving extraordinary detail directly into its natural surface.

This Dragon Turtle is a wonderful example of his work. The dragon's face has been intricately defined, from its curling horns and expressive eyes to the flowing details surrounding its head. Across its back sits the turtle's carefully patterned shell, while individually carved scales, claws and sweeping details continue around the body. Despite its relatively small size, there is an enormous amount happening within the carving.

The natural Carnelian ranges through warm golden yellow, honey and deeper orange tones, with changes in translucency allowing different sections of the carving to become more pronounced as the light moves through it. Its untouched surface gives the piece a very different character from highly polished Carnelian and preserves much more of the stone's natural appearance.

The Dragon Turtle, known as Longgui (龙龟) in Chinese culture, combines two important auspicious creatures. The Dragon represents strength, success, authority and good fortune, while the Turtle is associated with longevity, stability, wisdom and protection. Together, they have become a traditional Feng Shui symbol connected with prosperity, steady progress, protection and long-term success.

Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, itself a microcrystalline form of Quartz. Its orange to reddish colouring is associated with iron oxides within the material. Metaphysically, Carnelian is traditionally connected with confidence, motivation, creativity, courage and vitality, making it a particularly fitting stone for the symbolism of the Dragon Turtle.

For us, though, the real significance of this piece is the craftsmanship. We have chosen only a small collection from this carver for our first release, and each represents days of work from someone who has spent decades refining his specialty.

Once these are gone, there isn't a box of another hundred sitting behind them. And I think that is exactly how pieces like these should be. 🧡🐉🐢

🐉🐢 Dragon Turtle (Long Gui)

The Dragon Turtle is a known creature in classical feng shui, combining the strength and courage of the dragon with the endurance and stability of the turtle. Together, they symbolise success achieved through wisdom, protection, and perseverance. Traditionally placed to attract prosperity and support long-term growth, the Dragon Turtle represents ambition grounded by discipline and the balance of power and patience that ensures success endures.
