🔮 Carnelian: The Passionate Powerhouse

🧡 Sacral Chakra

This exceptional Qilin is another piece from the specialist Carnelian carver we discovered tucked away in a local location during our travels through China. After decades devoted specifically to carving Carnelian, his work has a level of detail and character that immediately stood apart from the more commercially produced carvings we regularly see.

He works slowly and in very small numbers, generally having only around 10 to 15 completed pieces available at any one time. Individual carvings can take days to finish, with some requiring up to a week of work. This Qilin makes it very easy to understand why.

The detail is extraordinary. Its powerful dragon-like head has been given sweeping horns, an expressive face and individually worked features, while the body is covered in layer upon layer of tiny scales. Even the legs, feet, mane and tail have been carefully defined. When you consider the size of the piece, the amount of carving involved becomes even more impressive.

The Carnelian itself has been deliberately left unpolished, retaining a softly textured, almost matte appearance. Warm honey, amber and deeper orange tones move naturally through the carving, with areas of translucency becoming particularly beautiful when held to the light. Rather than forcing the stone into a perfectly uniform finish, the carver has allowed the natural character of the Carnelian to remain part of the finished work.

The Qilin (麒麟) is one of the great auspicious creatures of Chinese mythology. Often described as a Chinese unicorn, although its traditional appearance is quite different from the Western unicorn, the Qilin can combine characteristics of a dragon, deer or horse, frequently with scales covering its body.

Traditionally, the Qilin is associated with benevolence, wisdom, prosperity, longevity and good fortune. Its appearance was considered an exceptionally favourable omen, sometimes connected with the arrival or presence of a wise and virtuous person. Despite its powerful appearance, the Qilin is traditionally regarded as a peaceful and gentle creature.

Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, known for its warm orange through reddish tones. Metaphysically, it is associated with courage, confidence, motivation, creativity and vitality. Combined with the Qilin, it creates a lovely pairing of strength with benevolence, and confidence with wisdom.

This is exactly why we wanted to bring a small selection of this carver's work home. You can find plenty of Carnelian carvings, but finding someone who has spent decades specialising in the material and is prepared to spend days working on a single little creature is something quite different. 🧡

💛 The Qilin is a traditional East Asian mythical creature long associated with protection, integrity, and wise authority. Unlike more aggressive guardian figures, the Qilin represents strength guided by ethics, discernment, and calm leadership.

Traditionally, a Qilin is placed near an entryway, in a study, office, or main living area, where it symbolically oversees the space rather than dominates it. It is often positioned facing into a room or toward a doorway, reflecting its role as a watchful presence rather than a defensive barrier.

The Qilin is also linked with prosperity earned through right action, good judgement, and long term thinking. It is considered a marker of refinement and discernment, making it especially suited to spaces where decisions are made, ideas are developed, or stability is valued.

Understated in meaning yet rich in heritage, the Qilin carries an energy of protection through wisdom rather than force. A quiet statement of confidence, balance, and considered power.
