We had the opportunity to have first pick of this incredible collection of shark carvings, and Niome and I individually chose each one for its stone, carving and overall character. This Ocean Jasper shark immediately stood out with its deep, moody colouring and natural patterning running throughout the entire body.
The carving captures that unmistakable shark silhouette beautifully, with a long streamlined body, prominent dorsal fin, sweeping tail and defined gill detail. There is a real sense of movement to the shape, as though the shark is cutting its way through the water.
The Ocean Jasper itself gives this piece a completely different personality. Deep forest and blue-green tones dominate the carving, broken up by earthy reddish-brown markings, darker areas and natural variations that become more apparent as the polished surface catches the light.
Ocean Jasper is an orbicular and patterned variety of Chalcedony associated with Madagascar, known for the enormous variation that can occur from one piece to another. While some material displays obvious circular formations, other pieces are prized for their intricate patterning, colour combinations and natural mineral features.
Sharks have inhabited Earth's oceans for hundreds of millions of years, surviving enormous changes to the planet and developing into some of the ocean's most successful and highly adapted predators. Their streamlined form, strength and unmistakable presence have fascinated people for generations.
This is a fantastic piece for the shark lover who wants something beyond a traditional animal carving. Its substantial size, strong shark profile and darker Ocean Jasper patterning give it plenty of presence, while the natural variation throughout the stone means there will never be another one exactly like it.
