This exceptional Selenite specimen from the Qinglong Mine in Guizhou, China immediately stood apart from the others we selected because of the extraordinary clarity hidden within its centre.

From the outside, the specimen has a heavily textured, almost frost-like surface, with countless fine crystalline growth patterns creating an intricate natural framework across the face. Look through the central section, however, and the character of the piece completely changes.

Inside is an incredibly clear natural window.

The transparency through this section allows you to look directly into and through the Selenite, creating an almost looking-glass effect. The contrast is fascinating, with delicate frosted crystal growth surrounding an interior that appears remarkably clear and open.

And sitting within the lower section is another little surprise. Small golden-yellow Calcite crystals are visible through the clear Selenite window, appearing almost suspended within the specimen when viewed from the front. Their warm colour is subtle, but against the colourless transparency of the Selenite they become a wonderful mineralogical detail to discover.

Selenite is the transparent crystalline variety of Gypsum, a hydrated calcium sulphate mineral. Its softness and perfect cleavage make large, well-preserved specimens particularly delicate, while its ability to form exceptionally transparent crystals is responsible for the glass-like appearance seen through this piece.

Calcite is calcium carbonate and occurs in an enormous range of crystal habits and colours. Here, the small yellow Calcite adds both another mineral species and a beautiful point of contrast within the otherwise clear and white specimen.

Under ultraviolet light, the specimen reveals another dimension, with areas responding differently beneath the UV. But unlike some of our other Qinglong pieces, I think the real story of this specimen is what can already be seen in ordinary light. That extraordinary natural window gives you a view straight into the internal structure of the Selenite and allows the little Calcite crystals within to be appreciated from outside.

Metaphysically, Selenite is traditionally associated with clarity, cleansing and peaceful energy, while Calcite is associated with motivation, positive energy and clearing stagnant thought.

This is one of those specimens that rewards looking closely. From a distance it appears almost icy and heavily textured. Move in front of that clear window and suddenly you are looking straight into another world inside the crystal. 🤍

Then there are crystals that have a delicate structure like Scolecite with their acicular fine needles shooting out from their matrix. Such delicate specimens and when you think about first the care within the handling that’s gone into first mining them, to then shipping them all around the world, my hat goes off to them.

Here are a few things to consider and even research when looking at collectible crystals for yourself -

The size of a certain crystal can be a factor as to whether it’s considered a collectible piece and can vary depending on the crystal type.

larger pieces have been around for a lot longer so to find a larger piece in a specific crystal can be an amazing investment. While smaller crystals depending on the stone itself might be of the rarer variety or the quality is outstanding, therefore it’s amazing it was even found.

If it is a fragile and delicate crystal and has not sustained any damage or minor damage. 

Quality of course comes into it as you can have some amazing fluorite and then you have some beautiful gem like Fluorite which is quite rare, especially Blue Fluorite

Specific crystals formed and still on their matrix opposed to polished and carved pieces etc of the same crystal. This can be the game changer between an incredible piece and a collectible piece.

In the end it comes down to what you are drawn too and what is drawn to you. The bonus is when you buy a collectible crystal it becomes a physical investment and will only grow in value in the years to come.
